Mining Industry
Mining relies on sophisticated industrial brake systems across a wide range of equipment: dragline excavators, high-speed conveyor belts, dump trucks, and winches lowering equipment into subterranean depths all depend on precisely engineered brakes for safety and efficiency.
The sector uses conveyor systems, grinding mills, stackers/reclaimers, mine hoists, and various other rotating drive equipment requiring brake systems. Brake systems can range from modest units starting at 2,900 lb (12.8 kN) of clamping force up to extremely large systems at up to 1 million lb (4,448 kN) of clamping force.
Braking systems range from simple on/off emergency braking units to more complex PLC-controlled systems with several modes of braking response based on feedback from changing conditions. On grinding mills, Johnson has supplied gearless SAG mill caliper brakes; on conveyors, electric thruster disc brakes utilizing existing AC power are a common solution.
