Johnson Industries | Elevanja

110+ years of British engineering heritage.

Since 1915, Elevanja has supplied precision braking systems to the UK and European markets, specialising in Electric and Electro-hydraulic (Thruster) Brakes for transit, nuclear, petrochemical, steel, ports, and defence applications.

A Century of British Engineering Heritage

Elevanja has been operating in the UK since 1915, supplying braking systems to some of the most demanding transit, nuclear, and petrochemical applications in Europe. Today, Elevanja functions as Johnson Industries' UK and European division, sharing the same engineering standards and manufacturing discipline as our Canadian operations.

Elevanja is known in the market under several names, including Johnson Elevanja Ltd. and simply Elevanja, and is recognized by distributors across Europe as part of the combined Johnson/Elevanja brand. Wherever the name appears, the brakes behind it meet the same standard Johnson Industries customers rely on worldwide.

Projects That Depend on Elevanja

London Underground

Elevanja has supplied brakes to Transport for London for decades, fitting DA/SMAA magnetic drum brakes for everyday service duty and CU/CX magnetic disc brakes for emergency duty on the headshaft, across hundreds of escalators network-wide. The longest installation, at The Angel station, is a 61-metre escalator with a 27-metre rise — the longest in Europe when it was built.

New York City Subway

Elevanja has supplied CU2 magnetic disc brakes used on New York subway escalators, extending the same emergency-duty braking standard proven on the London Underground to one of the busiest transit systems in North America.

Lindstrand Hi-Flyer Tethered Balloons

Built in the UK and supplied to cities worldwide for leisure flights, each Lindstrand Hi-Flyer balloon attraction is fitted with a Johnson 18HHHX hydraulic caliper brake supplied by Elevanja.

Angels Flight, Los Angeles

This 125-year-old historic funicular railway, reopened in 1917, runs on Johnson Elevanja CL10 thruster disc brakes. Elevanja has supplied similar hydraulic caliper brakes (20MH & 30HHHX) for historic funicular railways across the UK.

Elevanja Braking Capabilities

Elevanja draws on the full Johnson Industries product range, with particular depth in the electric and electro-hydraulic (thruster) braking systems used across transit, nuclear, petrochemical, steel, ports, and defence applications, including escalators and funiculars.
